TAZEWELL COUNTY, Va. – A Tazewell County deputy and his K-9 partner have been very busy lately when it comes to taking drugs off the streets of Tazewell County.
Corporal Cody Rowe and K-9 Reni have been on a hot streak recently when it comes to confiscating drugs. In recent weeks, Rowe and Reni have been able to take a variety of drugs off the streets of Tazewell County.
“He does a lot of stuff. He does patrol utility so that means tracking, article searches, criminal apprehension and he also does narcotic detection. He can detect cocaine, heroine, methamphetamine and any derivative of those,” said Rowe.
Rowe says about a month ago the two had an eight day long streak of finding drugs with individuals which is a personal best. They also recently came off of a four day long streak.
“You get better as time goes on and you can see things that stick out to you. Criminal indicators, you get better at picking up on them. Once you kind of get an eye on what it is that you’re looking for you can kind of figure out what that normal is for criminal indicators. It’s real easy from there and you can pop them left and right,” said Rowe.
Rowe says he trains with Reni at least an hour each day to keep him up to par on his drug detection skills.
“I’ll go around at one or two o’clock in the morning and go find somewhere to try to train. The guys on my shift are really good about helping. They will lay tracks, hide drugs, whatever for me so we can get our reps in for the night,” said Rowe.
Reni is just one of three K-9’s at the sheriff’s office has that is nationally certified to help find drugs as well as track individuals.
Rowe has been a K-9 deputy at the sheriff’s office for six years. He adds he also has K-9 experience at a previous police agency as well as in the corrections system.
