PRINCETON, W.Va. – The American Red Cross reports 1 in 22 house fires started by Christmas trees end in a death. When taking down Christmas lights, if you are using a ladder you want to make sure it’s level, and you should always have someone with you footing the ladder.
If you are going to be outside taking down decorations, check the weather first to make sure conditions are clear.
When dealing with electricity, you want to turn off the power before unplugging anything.
If you are choosing to keep your real Christmas tree up, you want to make sure they are continuing to be watered.
A fire fighter with the Princeton Fire Department explains more.
“You always want to make sure if you’re dealing with the electrical, you turn off the power to make sure it’s not hot. You want to make sure that you get your live Christmas trees out of the house, and make sure you still water them if you’re going to keep them inside. With ladder safety, you want to maintain a safe angle when dealing with stuff like that,” said Colton Morgan, Fire Fighter for Princeton Fire Department.
