CLAY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – Two people are dead after a landslide in Kentucky, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Clay County sheriff says it happened around 1 a.m. Friday in the Stone Gap Road area north of Manchester, near the Wild Cat community.

The sheriff says the call initially came in as a crash. However, when deputies arrived, they discovered the side of the mountain had slid onto the road.  Crews later found two bodies.

We’re told there is an old coal mine around the mountain, and the sheriff’s office thinks these two people might have been trying to retrieve coal at the time of the slide.

The incident is now under investigation.

We’ll keep you updated.
