Coronation Street is set to unveil a shocking new storyline, signalling devastating news for several of the soap’s beloved characters.
The ITV soap, which has frequently tackled groundbreaking and timely plots ranging from infidelity and homicide to the arrival of quadruplets, has consistently enthralled viewers with its gripping storylines.
The focus was on a troublesome teenager named Lauren Bolton, portrayed by Cait Fitton, in the year 2024. The character’s ominous arc culminated in the murder of her assailant, Joel Deering, played by Calum Lill. Moreover, in a sorrowful development, the audience had to bid farewell to Paul Doreman, depicted by Pete Ash, following his fight with MND.
As 2025 dawns, Corrie fans should brace themselves for a “hard-hitting” plot twist involving knife crime, as disclosed by the show’s new producer, Kate Brooks, to Plymouth Live: “Just when you thought it was safe to relax, we start the year with a big knife crime story.”, reports Plymouth Live.
Describing the forthcoming narrative as a pressing social concern, Kate highlighted: “The statistics are so alarming. I think knife crime has gone up by 80% in the past 10 years. We’ve worked really closely with the Ben Kinsella Foundation to ensure that we are telling the story right, and to ensure the message is don’t carry a knife after fear because that escalates everything.”
Several soap favourites are in for a shock, as Kate revealed: “It’s going to be very hard-hitting. We have Mason [Radcliffe] at the centre of it. We have Dylan [Wilson] involved, it has massive ramifications for Abi [Webster] and for Tim [Metcalfe] and Sally [Metcalfe] going forward.”
Kate further teased the drama on the cobbles, saying: “And we just felt like it’s a subject that we couldn’t ignore. It has quite big consequences for people. It’s not a subject matter that has been tackled lightly. It’s an important one to talk about, it’s an important one to let young people know carrying that a bladed article is not the way.”
As for whether the individual who gets stabbed dies, Kate remained tight-lipped. She did warn though: “It has got a lot of impact on people. And it’s not just Mason and Dylan and Betsy who are the heart of it. There are other characters involved. It’s a real community story, but a real shocking story.”
Moreover, soap spoilers for the episodes airing from Monday 6 January, confirm that tragically, Mason is the resident who gets stabbed. After Mason calls the cops on his thug brothers Matty and Logan, they want revenge and chase after him.
In a shocking twist, Mason is stabbed and found bleeding by Abi Franklin who tries to save him while waiting for the emergency services. In the ambulance, Betsy comforts Abi as they both try to assure Mason that he will pull through. But the question remains – will the young lad make it?
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
