NEWTON, Mass. (WCVB) – Four adults were found dead inside a New Hampshire vacation home on Christmas Day.

It’s believed they were victims of an apparent exposure to carbon monoxide.

Loved ones are remembering the couple from Massachusetts and their two adult children.

“The whole thing’s just an overwhelming tragedy,” Mia Cohen, a family friend, said. “Finding silver linings seems cruel almost because it’s just horrifying beyond comprehension.”

The story is difficult to comprehend.

The family members who died from an apparent exposure to carbon monoxide inside their New Hampshire vacation home on Christmas Day have been identified as 52-year-old Matt Goldstein, his 54-year-old wife Lyla Goldstein, along with their daughters Valerie and Violet Goldstein

“You can’t make this kind of thing up, you know? Like the whole family, today’s supposed to be her birthday,” Jesse King said. “It’s like something out of a movie.”

King is also a family friend.

Instead of birthday gifts for Valerie Goldstein, friends dropped flowers in front of the family home.

“They were all really close,” Keren Kohane remembered of the four victims.

Friends say the sisters were especially close; they even had matching tattoos put on their arms this year.

As longtime Newton residents, Matt Goldstein taught in a Brookline school. Lyla Goldstein was a project manager at Microsoft. Violet Goldstein was a 19-year-old student at the Rhode Island School of Design. Valerie Goldstein, a 22-year-old fifth grade teacher in North Carolina, followed her father’s footsteps as an educator.

“They were very accepting, too. They were always so warm and welcoming,” Kohane added. “We would have karaoke nights. She was one of the people that I really kept in contact with during Covid because of karaoke, and her dad would sometimes come down and sing with us. And I’m also half-Chinese and Jewish like Valerie was, and that was a bonding moment for us too.”

Investigators say there were no carbon monoxide detectors in the home. They continue to look into the cause.
