FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA/Gray News) – An 8-year-old boy in Indiana died after falling through the ice of a frozen pond last week.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the child as 8-year-old Xavier Bordley.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), multiple agencies responded to a location off Slash Pass in Allen County for a report of a missing child last Sunday afternoon.
After arriving at the scene, officials said a water rescue was carried out after they determined a child had fallen through thin ice.
The Indiana DNR said an 8-year-old and 9-year-old were playing on thin ice at a neighborhood pond when the 8-year-old fell through.
The 9-year-old child tried to help the 8-year-old before falling through himself.
The 9-year-old child was able to get to safety and get the other child’s father, who searched for his son in chest-deep water but could not find him.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department made a recovery of the child from the pond at 1 p.m.
After the water rescue, they say the boy was taken to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition for further treatment.
He was later taken to a hospital in Indianapolis where he later died.
