A film that fans are hailing as ‘Michael Bay’s best work’ since his iconic 90s action films is set to air on TV tonight.
The director, renowned for hits like The Rock, Bad Boys and five Transformers movies, has received high praise for his latest feature film, with many considering it one of his finest since the early days of his career. The good news for movie buffs is that the 2022 release, Ambulance, will be broadcasted on television free of charge.
The film is scheduled to air on Film4 at 9pm on Sunday, December 29. For those unable to tune in at this time, the film can also be streamed at their convenience, provided they have an Amazon Prime subscription. Ambulance is an English-language remake of a Danish film of the same name that was released back in 2005.
The plot revolves around decorated veteran Will Sharp (portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II from Candyman and The Matrix Resurrections), who finds himself in desperate need of money to cover his wife’s medical expenses and turns to his adoptive brother Danny (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) for help. Danny proposes a job that involves the largest bank heist in Los Angeles history, with a potential loot of $32 million, reports the Mirror.
Fearing for his wife’s life, Will consents to the heist, but their escape plan fails catastrophically, leading them to commandeer an ambulance. In the vehicle are a critically wounded police officer and EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza Gonzalez of Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw).
The siblings are thrust into a frantic chase as they try to elude capture by law enforcement sprawling through the city and work out how they might just pull off the impossible.
The film received a mixed response from critics, but there was still commendation: “Michael Bay at his best and even at his worst…. But still it’s a damn good time at the movies. Jake Gyllenhaal is unhinged, Yahya Abdul brings the emotional core with Eiza Gonzalez. I was on edge the entire time and I can’t wait to see it again.”
Another critic asserted that Michael Bay had returned to form, stating: “One of Michael Bay’s better action thrillers in years! Yahya and Gyllenhaal sell me on their brotherly relationship and every reaction decision they make from the start. It’s engaging, entertaining and action packed with a finish line which works in Bay’s favour.”
Enthusiasts of the director’s work also suggest Ambulance stands out, with a fan commenting: “This was Michael Bay best movie since action classic The Rock.”
Another chimed in: “Nobody quite does unbridled action like Michael Bay and boy have we missed the master director since his chaotic but immensely watchable 6 Underground! The Bay-ness is at an all-time high in his latest venture, Ambulance where Jake Gyllenhaal and crew are let loose on the streets of Los Angeles with cars, guns and helicopters thrown around like kitty litter to devastating, yet immersive and enjoyable effect.”
A third sang its praises as ‘highly recommended’, exclaiming: “The action is non stop and I mean non stop, the story is insane but the cast are so much more than the film deserves and this is what makes it such a good fun demented insane action flick.”
Ambulance is on Film4 at 9pm Sunday December 29 and streaming on Amazon Prime.
