Galston care home residents are raising funds for special days out by completing small challenges.
The comfort fund is money that is provided by West Park Care Home and money that is generated through different fundraising events to provide the residents with fun days out and entertainment at the care home.
The first resident to take part in the challenge was an 83-year-old Mary Murray who took up the challenge of doing her daily 200 steps to raise £50.
With a help of generous community, Mary fundraised £230 which she spent on tropical fish, live plants for a new fish tank in the lounge and the money were also spent on a unit for the fish tank to sit on.
Mary also donated £50 to the Darvel Dinner Ladies who actively put on community events which West Park Care Home residents are “very pleased to attend”.
Andrena Weir, activity coordinator at West Park Care Home, said: “I donated a fish tank to the home so the £50 that we were hoping to raise was to buy some tropical fish and some live plants for the tank.
“Mary’s fundraiser raised £230 from our very generous community!
“She was totally shocked. She couldn’t believe that people were donating to her fundraiser. She liked hearing all the comments of encouragement that people were leaving with their donations.
“I asked her how she felt whilst doing it and she said it felt great to be part of something and so proud knowing that she had raised the money.
“We are all very proud of her.”
Andrena continued: “This is the first time it’s been done.
“I was just thinking about different ways to raise funds and I asked the residents at the residents meeting if they would like to be involved. I gave them a couple of ideas of things they could do and a few of them were very keen to be involved.”
The next resident to do a challenge will be Betty Steele who would like to raise enough to pay for an entertainer to come to the care home and perform for everyone.
Andrena said: “I have still to sit down and chat with Betty properly about her challenge to make sure she’s comfortable and confident doing it.
“We are only going to be doing the challenges every 4-5 months.
“Betty has mentioned that she would like to raise enough to pay for an entertainer to come to the home and perform for everyone, she said it would feel good knowing that she has raised the money to pay for an afternoon of entertainment for everyone to enjoy.”
