COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX/Gray News) – A homeowner and their dog died in a Christmas Day house fire in Vermont.

The Colchester Fire Chief said Wednesday around 3:45 a.m., crews got a call about a house fire. When they arrived, at least half of the home was on fire and the roof started caving in, according to the fire chief.

It took about 20 minutes for firefighters to put the fire out.

Crews began cleaning up and searching for the homeowner and found their body that afternoon. The homeowner’s dog was also found dead, according to authorities.

Chief Scott Crady said crews were called in from surrounding areas and many firefighters halted their own holidays to help.

“You’re leaving your family a morning you want to be at home, and you’re coming out here to help your community and they’re all very dedicated to helping their community. And they do this for the love of it. Unfortunately, things like this do happen,” Scott said.

Authorities are investigating the house fire and the homeowner’s death.
