Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell insists they were robbed when Tony Watt was denied a goal by VAR in the 2-2 draw against Rangers.

Watt went up for a corner with Rangers keeper Jack Butland and knocked the ball into the net in 58 minutes, which would have given Motherwell a 3-1 lead at Fir Park.

But a VAR check ruled there had been a foul on the goalkeeper.

Watt had another goal disallowed in 63 minutes for an offside, and Rangers went up the pitch to net their equaliser through Igamane’s second strike five minutes later.

Motherwell had taken a two-goal lead in the first half through strikes by Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Tawanda Maswanhise, but failed to capitalise on that in the secon half.

Kettlewell said: “I think it’s fair to say [that should have stood]. Again, I’m just left bemused, by the on-field decision, for me it’s complete over-protection of a goalkeeper.

““If we’re saying the level of contact from Tony Watt justifies the foul, then I would argue does the level of contact from Jack Butland to Tony Watt to shove him out the way to initiate it, does that then merit a penalty kick?

“That’s where I think we’re getting to, and the answer is ‘no’ to either. It’s certainly not a penalty but for me it’s certainly not a free kick.

“Tony is doing his job on the goalkeeper, which you’re allowed to do.

“I think I saw an incident a few weeks ago at Spurs when they scored direct from a corner and there’s a similar type of incident.

“They had a quick look at it, check it, give the goal, and we carry on with the rest of the game.

“It’s two people’s interpretation, two different organisations’ interpretations. Down there they play on, there isn’t over-protection of the goalkeeper, but for some reason today here we’ve decide there’s enough to merit a free kick.”

Kettlewell added: “This is now going into the realms of six or seven weeks with key decisions that I believe are going against us.

“Some of those have been confirmed as wrong, and we almost get a pat on the head and move on to the next one.

“People need to realise how much I care about it, how much the players care about it, and how much we’re fighting and scrapping to do the absolute best we can.

“I don’t blame referees or officials for outcomes of games of football, but what I do ask for the correct decision. Not the rub of the green, but the correct call.”

Kettlewell reckons his side gave them everything they had, but just came up short.

He said: “Players were out on their feet. We did what we set out to do in the first half, you have an idea of trying to get at the opposition and what they’re going to try and bring towards you.

“You hear the atmosphere in here at half-time, the Motherwell supporters are over the moon, Rangers supporters are completely discontent with what they’re seeing.

“Our message at half-time is that we come hard at the start of the second half, show good reactions, try to play the game in their half of the pitch, get in their faces, and we didn’t.

“It took us that wee bit too long to get into the second half, and that’s twice it has happened. It happened in the semi-final against them when we were 1-0 up, and it has happened here again today.”

Kettlewell was sent to the stand for his reaction to a booking for Lennon Miller, and when Watt’s goal was disallowed.

He said: “I ended up watching the rest of the game in the stand and usual bit, they’re throw the book at us and there will be another suspension to come, but I’m not going to change. I feel passionately about the game, this club, about what happens on the pitch and calling it as I see it.”
