Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) faces speaker election

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – Current President Joe Biden remains on holiday in the U.S. Virgin Islands while incoming president Donald Trump is at his Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida. The 118th Congress is finished; the 119th Congress is just getting started.

It’s a new year and Congress is set to start their 119th session this Friday, January 3. But first up, for the week ahead, is the election of the Speaker of the House.

Current Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson is facing backlash amongst some Republican lawmakers after working with Democrats to pass a short-term funding bill to keep the government open.

And even though Johnson won the GOP nomination to remain House Speaker with overwhelming support, his seat is up for grabs in the House Speaker election this Friday as Capitol Hill welcomes a new Congress. It’s literally the first order of business.

The House cannot function without a Speaker so, a decision must be made that day. Which will then allow them to certify the presidential election, scheduled for just 3 days later on January 6th . As a reminder, Johnson became the speaker after members of the house ousted former house speaker, Kevin McCarthy.

When Congress returns, both the House and Senate will be fully run by Republicans, who even with a small majority have already vowed to work with president-elect Trump to pass his “America first” agenda.
