Airdrie Academy ended its 175th anniversary year celebrations in style with a special showcase event.

The school created an online anthology of stories relating to pupils, staff and the community during its memorable history.

To mark the archive’s completion, more than 100 past and present pupils and staff were welcomed to a commemorative gathering by head teacher Martin Anderson.

The school’s in-house pipers and drummers entertained the guests, who also tucked into delicious cakes from Christies Bakers and sandwiches made by pupils.

A school spokesperson told Lanarkshire Live: “Everyone heard highlights of the project from its leader Gail Crosbie.

“We had archive displays dating back to the 1890s and coverage by journalists from Shire Radio.

“The senior pupils who helped out were a credit to themselves and the school.

“A huge number of pupils helped out with organising display materials, making up gift bags, setting the tables for afternoon tea and hosting guests on the day.

“They were rewarded with pin badges and certificates after the day.

“There was lots of positive feedback from guests about how welcoming, polite and well mannered our pupils were.”

The spokesperson added: “Thanks so much to Shire Radio journalist Arthur Grainger for producing an amazing podcast featuring S6 superstars Marley Rodger, Amy Murray, Chloe Trueman and Jack Cutmore.

“The podcast is a great insight into our school in 2024 and our amazing pupils do such a good job of capturing what fantastic opportunities are on offer for Airdrie Academy pupils nowadays.

“You can listen to the podcast online now.”

Former pupil Raymond Davidson, who attended Airdrie Academy from 1959-1965, made a “substantial contribution” to the school’s 175th anniversary.

The spokesperson explained: “Raymond sponsored the senior prizegiving in June, very kindly donated a set of Chrome books for our young people to use and gifted a beautiful crystal glass embossed with the school crest and school values to all members of staff.

“Raymond owns Glencairn Crystal and previously gifted a beautiful thistle crystal vase for the school’s 150th anniversary in 1999 and commemorative glassware for the opening of our new building in 2006.

“We thank Raymond wholeheartedly for his generosity and support.”
