Callan Rydz reckons he was inspired to success by his new and cruel “s*** hair” song.
The Geordie was given stick and support at the same time for his barnet at the Ally Pally. Rydz’s name was chanted by the fans as he trailed 2-0 to Rob Owen. Unfortunately, the song was “he’s got s**t hair but we don’t care, Callan, Callan Rydz.” The fans also chanted: “He’s got a bird’s nest in his hair.”. However, he lapped it up and said: “Listen, I’m all for the banter, so they can give us it. I can give it them just as much as they can give me if I meet them individually.
“I mean, you can see what they said. I’ll not cry about it. I’ve had worse off. Loads of people back home, my best friends, they rip the mick out of me all the time. I love the banter with them and I think they won me this game. I didn’t win it through darts. They won me the game, so I’ve got to thank them. I averaged 97 in the end and I felt like I struggled, so it shows I’m in a good state going forward.”
Rydz may have been amused at that, but he was also sombre and emotional on the stage and afterwards as he reflected on the loss of a loved family member. He said: “It means the world. I’m really overwhelmed at the minute. I was tearing up on stage before I came up.
“I was flicking through my Facebook and I seen a photo that celebrated Christmas with my grandma who I lost, so this is for her. You know, that was one of the reasons I’m still playing darts, her and my grandad. So, yeah, I did get quite emotional.”
