Celtic are set to send defender Stephen Welsh on loan to Belgian side KV Mechelen to give him game-time.

The 24-year-old from Coatbridge has played just twice for the Hoops this season, including in the 0-0 draw with Dundee United at Tannadice, but wasn’t in the squad for their 4-0 win over St Johnstone on Sunday.

KV Mechelen are keen on the Scotland star, and have tabled a couple of offers.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trust and Liam Scales are in front of Welsh in the Celtic squad, with Maik Nawrocki also at Parkhead, while the Scottish champions are reportedly set to bring defender Dane Murray back from an impressive loan spell at Championship club Queen’s Park.

Murray has drawn the eye and is reportedly a target for Premiership clubs and interest from England, while the youngster would also help Celtic’s need for homegrown talent in European competition.

Welsh, who goes into the final year of his contract in the summer, has come through the ranks at Celtic, but needs regular game-time and didn’t feature for the first team between a 5-2 Premier Sports Cup win over Falkirk in September and the Hoops’ stalemate in Dundee.
