The mum of an ex-Rangers youth player has confirmed that her son suffered “multiple injuries” in a horror road crash.
Hamilton Accies midfielder Ben Williamson, 23, was involved in the crash which happened in the early hours of Sunday, December 29.
Officers from Police Scotland were called to the incident on Queensferry Road in Dunfermline and the 26-year-old driver was arrested and Ben, who was a passenger in the vehicle, were rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.
Ben was in the squad the day before the incident as Accies beat Airdrie 3-2 at New Douglas Park to move into seventh place in the Scottish Championship.
Speaking to the Record his mum, Avril, revealed how her son is expecting to undergo major surgery for a broken femur and has also fractured bones in his back and pelvis, but she hopes he will be back playing football eventually. .
She said: “”Ben has suffered a number of injuries and is going for surgery on his broken femur this afternoon.
“He also suffered another two fractures in his pelvis and at the bottom of his back but the surgeon has said these don’t require any intervention and will heal on their own.
“We have been told that he is going to make a full recovery but it is going to take a bit of time.”
Ben signed for Rangers in 2020 and after loan spells at Arbroath, Livingston, Raith Rovers, Dundee and Partick Thistle he left in January and signed for Hamilton Accies.
He has gone on to play 32 games for the club since signing and played a key role in the club’s promotion to the Scottish Championship.
Pictures of the wreckage show the aftermath of the smash. The black car can be seen completely wrecked on a grassy verge, with the windscreen shattered and glass and debris strewn across the scene. Another image shows the engine lying on the middle of the road, with oil spilled onto the carriageway.
Police Scotland shut the road for five hours while they carry out an investigation. They confimed the driver of the vehicle was arrested but said their enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers were called to Queensferry Road, Dunfermline after reports of a crash involving one vehicle at 6.25am on Sunday, 29 December, 2024. Both the driver and passenger were taken to hospital. The 26-year-old driver was arrested and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
Hamilton Accies revealed everyone at the club is “immensely saddened” at hearing about Ben’s injuries.
A spokesperson for the Championship side said: “Everyone at Hamilton Academical Football Club are immensely saddened by the news of the injuries sustained by Ben Williamson in a road traffic accident. Our thoughts are very much with him at this difficult time.”
A Rangers spokesperson said: “The thoughts of everyone at Rangers are with our former Academy player, Ben Williamson, and his family at this time.”
Greenock Morton manager Dougie Imrie wished Ben well on social media. He said: “Great lad. Hopefully he’s on the mend very soon and back doing what he loves doing playing football. Thoughts are with you wee man.”
