The New Year is just around the corner and Scots across the country will be readying themselves to say goodbye to 2024 and ring in 2025. With many people meeting family and friends for the bells, there will be lots of bottles, cans, containers, and packages being stuffed into bins.

So it’s important to know that bin collection dates often change around the New Year. To help, we’ve gathered a full list of bin collection dates to remember over the coming days into January 2025.

While some councils have moved their collections before their usual dates, others have been back a couple of days after. One area is even set to experience collection delays until mid-January.

Aberdeen City

Aberdeen’s bin collections on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, January 1, were moved to the Saturday before – December 28.

Aberdeenshire

If your collection day is:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • Thursday, January 2no changes

Angus

All collections due on festive public holidays will take place two days later than normal.

This means:

  • Collections due on Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Friday, January 3
  • Collections due on Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4

Argyll and Bute

These dates differ depending on where you live. To check your individual area, visit the council website.

Borders

There will be no household waste and recycling collections onWednesday, January 1, or Thursday, January 2.

These dates have been rescheduled as listed below.

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Sunday, January 5

Clackmannanshire

Residents can enter their postcode hereto find the waste collection calendar for Christmas and New Year.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar

Residents can check this online page here for the festive bin collection dates for your specific area.

Dumfries and Galloway

There will be slight changes to your waste or recycling collection day over the 2024 to 2025 New Year period. Please check below, and leave your bin out by 6.30am.

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Sunday, January 5
  • Dundee

    All household bin, recycling and trade waste collections will be operating one day behind the regular collection day over the New Year period. Arrangements are as follows:

    • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Thursday, January 2
    • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Friday, January 3
    • Friday, January 3: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4

    East Ayrshire

    Bin collections on December 31 and January 3 will operate as normal. As collection times vary during the festive season, containers should be presented for collection the night before uplift or by 6:30am.

    If your bins are collected on:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Sunday, January 5
  • East Dunbartonshire

    The Council’s waste service will not be operational on January 1, 2025 and January 2, 2025. The following regular collection dates will be changed to the festive dates outlined below:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Friday, January 3
  • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • East Lothian

    The following collection dates have been changed:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Sunday, January 5
  • East Renfrewshire

    There’ll be no household bin collections on Wednesday, January 1. If your bins are normally collected on a Wednesday, please put them out on Thursday instead and they’ll be collected by Saturday.

    All other days of the week will be collected as normal but East Renfrewshire council states that there still could be one or two-day delays.

    Edinburgh

    If your collection day is:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Thursday, January 2
  • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Friday, January 3
  • Friday, January 3: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • Falkirk

    All kerbside recycling and refuse collections are operating as normal except for those scheduled for uplift on the following dates when no collections will take place:

    • Wednesday, January 1
    • Thursday, January 2

    Fife

    Residents are asked to ensure their bin is out for 7am for collection. The rescheduled dates are below:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Sunday, January 5
  • Glasgow City

    You can find a table of the Christmas and New Year bin collections for Glasgow City Council on the website here, with each type of refuse addressed.

    Highland

    • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, December 28
    • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4

    If your bin is not emptied on the dates as detailed above, please leave it out and the Highland Council will collect it as soon as possible.

    Inverclyde

    Midlothian

    Bins due to be collected on:

    • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, December 28
    • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Sunday, December 29

    Moray

    The full festive bin collection schedule for each area and route Moray Council can be found on its website here.

    North Ayrshire

    This council area’s collection date differs depending on whereabouts you live on the mainland or islands. You can take a look at the full list of changes here.

    North Lanarkshire

    • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Monday, December 30
    • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Tuesday, December 31

    Orkney

    There will be some changes to bin collection during Christmas which differ depending on where you live. You can check specific collection dates for each area here.

    Perth and Kinross

    There will be no kerbside waste and recycling collections on January 1 and 2. Garden and food waste collections cease from Sunday, December 22, with collections returning to normal from Monday, January 6.

    Unless householders or commercial customers are notified directly by letter the following will apply:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Sunday, January 5
  • Renfrewshire

    There will be no brown bin collections between Monday, December 23, and Sunday, January 5. Brown bin collections will resume as normal on Monday, January 6.

    All other bin collections will operate as normal, except on Wednesday, January 1, when there will be no waste and recycling collections.

    Grey bin collections date changes:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Thursday, January 2
  • Green bin and blue bin collection date changes:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Saturday, December 28
  • A collection calendar has been sent to all households, except flats receiving bulk bin collections.

    Scottish Borders

    Shetland

    Dates for bin collections vary by area, which are detailed on the council’s website Christmas waste collection schedule here.

    South Ayrshire

    Festive collection dates for each bin type can be found on the council website here.

    South Lanarkshire

    Normal bin collection dates for certain dates have changed to the following:

  • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Thursday, January 2
  • Thursday, January 2: rescheduled to Friday, January 3
  • Friday, January 3: rescheduled to Saturday, January 4
  • Stirling

    Collections on Wednesday, January 1, will be collected on Thursday, January 2. All collections after January 1 on this week will occur one day later than regularly scheduled.

    West Dunbartonshire

    Bin collections for West Dunbartonshire have been officially pushed back by two weeks, with the council attributing disruption to “workforce resource challenges”.

    Residents whose bins are due to be collected on Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s Day will now all have to wait until 2025 for their bins to be collected on the following dates.

    • Wednesday, December 25: rescheduled to Wednesday, January 8
    • Thursday, December 26: rescheduled to Thursday, January 9
    • Wednesday, January 1: rescheduled to Wednesday, January 15
    • Thursday January 3: rescheduled to Thursday, January 16

    West Lothian

    There will be no grey, blue or green bin collections on New Year’s Day.

    Residents whose collections are due on these days should put their bins out on the following Friday, January 2, instead. Bins will be collected over the course of the following week, so please leave them out until they are emptied.

    No brown bin collections will take place over the two-week festive period, with last collections on Christmas Eve, with services resuming on Wednesday, January 8.
