Scotland is bracing for snow, as the Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings across the country and cautioned that areas will be hit by “blizzard conditions” this Hogmanay.
The treacherous conditions are threatening to derail Hogmanay celebrations, but fortunately, one savvy Scot has revealed a clever trick to keep going about your business without suffering a painful fall. And best of all, it won’t cost you a penny.
Taking to TikTok, mum-of-two Mel shared the genius hack that she considers to be an “absolute game changer”. Mel revealed that putting socks on over your shoes provides enough friction to combat the slippery surfaces that can otherwise lead to a fall.
Captioning her viral video, Mel wrote: “BEST (most needed) HACK atm in my opinion… socks worn over your shoes – to avoid slipping on the ice. Thank me later.”
She explained: “So, this is happening right now – absolute game-changer! When it’s icy, this ice is so so slippery, so wear socks and shoes. Game-changer!”
Mel added that the trick is entirely free as you only need to source an old pair of socks, the Mirror reports. She explained that the technique works if you place the socks over the entire shoe or just on the sole.
The canny mum encouraged her followers “don’t mind the faded socks”, and stressed that the potential embarrassment of sporting the unusual garment was far less than that of toppling over in public.
Viewers rushed to the comments to praise the clever hack. One declared it a “stupidly fantastic idea”, while another stressed that the technique “works like a charm”. Another gushed that Mel’s tip was a “perfect use for all those orphan socks, that the washing machine seems to create”.
A third fan added: “I don’t care what it looks like, better than going on your backside.” Another user said: “I’m so on this… I live in Scotland and am petrified of slipping I’ve had few falls too.. So thanks.”
