Tributes have poured in for Star Wars actor Angus MacInnes following the news that he has died aged 77.
The Canadian is best known for having played Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander in the first Star Wars (1977) – later subtitled A New Hope. As Gold Leader in the rebellion, his character flies a Y-wing and commands a squadron of pilots. Dutch however dies in battle during the assault on the first Death Star in the film.
To Scots audiences he may be recognised as Sonny Munro in River City.
The news of Angus’ death was announced by his family on December 30, reports the Mirror.. In a statement on a Facebook page for Angus, they said: “To all Angus’ fans around the world, with breaking hearts we write this: Angus MacInnes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and actor died on 23rd of December 2024. He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family and love.
“Angus’ career spanned decades, with unforgettable roles in films such as Star Wars: A New Hope (as Gold Leader, Jon “Dutch” Vander), Witness, Judge Dredd, Captain Phillips, and many others. His work touched countless lives, and he took great pride in being part of these stories that continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.”
The statement continued: “For Angus, the fans of Star Wars held a special place in his heart. He loved meeting you at conventions, hearing your stories, and sharing in your passion for the saga. He was continually humbled, delighted, and honoured by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community.
“Angus was more than an actor—he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humor into the lives of everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and fellow actors but also by his fans around the world – his family thank you all. The MacInnes Family.”
The post prompted an outpouring of tributes. One person reacted to the news: “It was a pleasure meeting him a few years ago. Such a nice man. May he rest peacefully.” Another fan wrote: “So sad to hear this news. I had the pleasure of meeting Angus twice in recent years and he was a very friendly man who enjoyed chatting with the fans, I’m sure he’ll be missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. He will always be remembered by Star Wars fans…RIP Gold Leader.”
A third wrote: “He will be greatly missed, I looked forward to seeing him at events every year, he always had a smile and a handshake, and was always genuinely pleased to meet with his fans.” Someone else wrote: “Gold Leader is now one with the Force.”
Alongside his appearance in Star Wars, Angus is also credited as having had roles in films like Witness (1985), Hellboy (2004) and Captain Phillips (2013). He’s credited as having appeared in TV shows like Vikings over the course of his career.
