Texas crawfish season typically runs January to July a peak of March to May. While prices may be down this year, they could be in short supply to start the season.

HOUSTON — There’s good news for anyone who’s ready to dive into some crawfish

Mudbugs are already on sale at some places across town, and the prices are expected to be about half of what they were last year. You may remember earlier this year, the drought led to a less-than-usual harvest, upping prices to about $12 to $13 per pound.

Because of all the recent rain, prices for a live sack this year are expected to start off around $5.50 to $6.50 per pound, according to Miles Garner from Clutch City Crawfish.

But the bad news — Garner does warn the cold snap we’re expecting to see over the next few weeks could make them harder to catch, which means they could be in shorter supply for the start of the year.

2. Peel it: Peel away the top of the tail shell to make it easier to get to the meat.

3. Pinch and pull: Pinch the bottom of the tail and pull the meat out with your fingers or teeth.
