(CNN) – New research on the effects of cigarette smoking may help encourage those who plan on quitting in 2025.
A new study out of England suggests a single cigarette cuts about 20 minutes off your life expectancy.
After accounting for socioeconomic status and other factors, researchers at University College London estimated the loss of life expectancy per cigarette at about 17 minutes for men and 22 for women.
When added up, a pack of 20 cigarettes per day would be estimated to take off nearly seven hours of life per pack.
The study also includes mortality data on men from the British doctors study and data on women from the Million Women Study.
Researchers found, on average, people who smoked throughout their lives lost about 10 years of life compared with people who never smoked.
The study was published Sunday in an editorial in the journal Addiction.
