If losing weight is one of your New Year’s resolutions, these tips might just be the key to success.

As the new year rolls in, many of us set goals for the next 12 months, with a significant number focusing on health improvements such as quitting smoking, working on mental well-being, and the ever-popular aim of losing weight.

However, sticking to these resolutions can be challenging, with some people abandoning their efforts just days into January. But according to one fitness guru, if you’re determined to lose weight this year, her advice could help.

In a TikTok video, Cassie, who posts under the username cassiebfitness, revealed that she “wasted” years attempting to slim down before successfully dropping an impressive 65lbs in 2020. She also managed to lose 75 lbs following childbirth, achieving her postpartum weight loss goal in under a year.

Her main rule is to avoid fad diets and trends that eliminate whole food groups. Instead, Cassie recommends using a calorie calculator, inputting details about your current weight and your weight loss targets.

This will then tell you what your calorie deficit is, and with the help of a tracking app you can log the foods you eat in a day to help you hit that number. She explained: “You don’t have to cut out foods, you don’t have to avoid foods, you don’t have to eat before or after certain times. You eat whatever you want, you just stay in a calorie deficit.”

Cassie’s next tip is to “find a way that you enjoy moving your body”. She shared that she gets her exercise by walking either outside or on a treadmill for 30-45 minutes a day, but stressed that it’s important to find an activity you love, whether that’s walking, cycling, or joining a dance class.

The specialist also suggested setting a range of fitness-related goals that aren’t tied to weight loss, such as running a mile, lifting a specific weight, or building confidence. This approach helps maintain motivation even when progress on the scales slows down or hits a plateau because having varied goals keeps you driven.

She added: “You’re going to aim for consistency, not perfection. There will be days when you eat over your calorie deficit and you don’t exercise, and that’s fine. You’re not looking for perfection here. This is not all or nothing. This is a lifestyle change and this is consistency. Aim to be consistent 85 to 90% of the time.”

Cassie also offered reassurance – even on difficult days, it’s essential to remember that setbacks don’t erase progress. Instead, the focus should be on carrying on the next day.

The comment section of her video was filled with appreciation for her advice, as many viewers credited her with giving them the motivation to pursue their own weight loss journey in 2025.

One person said: “Thank you, I needed this. I’m so afraid of failing that I struggle to start. Taking away the idea of perfection helps! ” Another viewer added: “You have inspired me, you came up at the right time.”
