An interior designer has divulged top tips and pitfalls to avoid if you’re considering giving your home a makeover in the new year.

The professional, who claims to build and design dream homes for her clients with an annual home décor budget exceeding £1 million, imparted her knowledge to assist budding DIY enthusiasts in saving money.

Bee, who posts under the username diaryofahomedesigner, kicked off the video by warning against cheap “screwless” socket faceplates. She said: “[They] look nice for the first two days and then they’re going to pop off and fall on the floor once a week for the rest of your life because your walls aren’t straight and they’re poor quality.”

She then highlighted the importance of ensuring proper waterproofing during bathroom renovations to avoid potential leaks before adding any new fixtures.

When it comes to choosing furniture, Bee advised steering clear of velvet sofas, explaining that they do not stand the test of time. She added: “The fabric flattens out and goes shiny, it’s no longer soft and it looks old beyond its years.”

For areas where savings can be made, Bee suggested purchasing aluminium ‘crittal style’ doors from cost-effective sources. “You’re already buying a look-alike product – real crittall doors are steel and triple the cost. What are you overpaying for? ” she asked.

If you’re considering installing new cabinets or wardrobes, Bee advises against choosing floor to ceiling options. She argues that they are more impractical than they appear unless you include a matching integrated step ladder to access the top shelves, which would otherwise be wasted space.

While many viewers appreciated Bee’s advice, some shared their own opinions in the comments section. One individual commented: ” Am I the only one who wants floor to ceiling cupboards purely to avoid the dusting?”

Another user added: “Ran to the comments to explain the top shelf wardrobe. They are ESSENTIAL if you have a family. Not just for suitcases but Christmas décor, old kid clothes, ski gear, big straw hats, the list goes on.”

A third person added: “Had screwless socket and switch plates for 5 years now – yet to have even one pop off?!?” In response, Bee said: “Maybe your walls are straight and they weren’t cheap.”
