ITV Vera’s is set to come to a close forever tonight after 14 years on air in the second part of the season 14 finale.

Last night’s part 1 episode on New Year’s Day concluded with a shocking death, leaving fans concerned for Brenda Blethyn’s character.

The penultimate episode featured Vera and her partner DI Joe Ashworth (David Leon) handling a complex case. The duo found themselves dealing with two separate cases when an ex-prisoner’s body was found on the River Tyne’s banks, the Mirror reports.

In the episode’s dramatic finale, Joe and Vera rushed to a cliff top where they confronted Imogen Langworth, who had murdered her mother, and her father Lucas Corbridge, who was falsely accused of killing his wife Marion.

In intense scenes, Vera tried to persuade Imogen to reveal the truth about her mother’s fate, but then Lucas appeared wielding a bloody rock, which he had used in an attempt to murder DC Kenny Lockhart.

A physical altercation ensued, during which Joe nearly fell off the cliff, before Lucas intervened and Imogen tragically fell to her death, leaving Vera, Joe, and a grief-stricken Lucas in shock.

As Vera chastised Joe for risking his life, she encouraged him to seek help following his father’s death. Earlier in the episode, it was revealed that Joe’s family were at odds, urging him to seek assistance over his father’s passing.

Brenda expressed: “There’s something up with Joe at the start of this series. He’s dragging his feet. Vera obviously has a soft spot for Joe. But she doesn’t carry people. Everyone has to pull their weight. And if there is something up, say what it is. Tell her what it is.”

She added: “We filmed a scene involving Vera and Joe on the St Mary’s Island causeway near Whitley Bay which is quite the exchange of words. There’s a history between them. In the very first episode of Vera, Joe scattered her father Hector’s ashes. It had a real impact on Vera.

“I love working with David. He only left after series four to pursue writing and directing, and no sooner had he done so that his film won an award at the Tribeca Film Festival. But he did return to direct an episode of Vera, Black Ice, series 8 episode 2.”

The final ever episode of Vera will air tonight on January 2 on ITV at 8pm and ITV1 at 9pm.
