(Gray News) – Many Amazon workers across the country are beginning to return to the office early this month.

The change was announced Sept. 23, 2023, by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in a message addressed to employees.

In the message, Jassy said the company made the decision for employees to come back to the office in the way they did before the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic to be “better set up to invent, collaborate, and be connected enough to each other and our culture to deliver the absolute best for customers and the business.”

Over the last few years following the pandemic, Amazon followed a policy that would allow regional leaders to determine how their teams worked.

Like many other companies at this time, corporate employees working for Amazon were allowed to work remotely.

In 2023, the company asked all employees to return to the office for three days a week.

According to KIRO, at least 30,000 Amazon employees did not agree with the three-day-a-week return-to-work policy at the time. The outlet reported that the number of employees came from a petition against the policy that was rejected by Amazon’s head of human resources.

“When we look back over the last five years, we continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant,” Jassy wrote.

“I’ve previously explained these benefits, but in summary, we’ve observed that it’s easier for our teammates to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture; collaborating, brainstorming, and inventing are simpler and more effective; teaching and learning from one another are more seamless, and teams tend to be better connected to one another.”
