AUSTIN, Texas — While we are tracking a warmup for this upcoming week, things could take a big turn from a temperature standpoint and possibly even a precipitation standpoint.
Here’s what we’re tracking.
Weekend warmup, then Arctic chill
We tracked highs in the mid-60s, which is slightly warmer than where we sat on New Year’s Day when both Camp Mabry and the Austin airport reached only 60. We’re tracking similar conditions for Friday, with mostly cloudy skies.
However, Friday won’t be our warmest day. That’d be on Sunday when highs should get to the lower 70s after upper 60s for Saturday. Afterward, we’re tracking a big Arctic cold front, which is a dry one, that’ll drop our temperatures for most of next week. Highs will likely not get out of the 40s, and lows could result in a widespread light freeze for Central Texas.
We could even have highs not even get to 40 by the time we get to Thursday, and while that is seven days out, there’s a lot to unpack with Wednesday and Thursday.
Winter Weather Potential
The American GFS long-range model indicates a chance of wintry precipitation for Wednesday into Thursday, but the European model keeps Central Texas dry for Wednesday, then and adds the precipitation on Thursday afternoon.
However, the European model only shows all rain, so we cannot lock in any type of wintry precipitation at this time. In fact, we currently have precip chances pegged at only 20% on Wednesday and 30% on Thursday due to this uncertainty.
While we understand the anxiety whenever winter weather is mentioned in any of our forecasts, it’s important to stay glued to the KVUE Weather Impact Team for all the latest throughout this weekend.
Summary
From a temperature standpoint, this is just like any winter in Central Texas with a brief warmup, followed by much colder temperatures for next week.
As such, while confidence is growing for any type of precipitation towards the middle of next week, we cannot truly lock in at this point what the precipitation type is, so you should stick with the KVUE Weather Impact Team for all the latest on it.
