WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – Congress is set to certify the 2024 Presidential Election on Monday, January 6. Thanks to a relatively new law, that process will is expected to go significantly smoother than January 6th, four years ago.

January 6, 2021 and the unprecedented attack on the Capitol was a wake-up call for a bipartisan group of lawmakers. Following the insurrection, they wanted to make certain that in America, there will always be a peaceful transfer of power.

Four years ago, hundreds of supporters of President Donald Trump attacked the Capitol with an unprecedented bloody riot and – in the process – disrupted the process of counting the electoral college votes.

That’s the final step in confirming who will be the next president of the United States.

In an effort aimed at preventing any uncertainty about who won and who lost the presidential election, in 2022, Congress passed the Electoral Count Reform Act.

The law signed by President Joe Biden prohibits state legislatures from overruling the results of the popular election; makes it more difficult for members of Congress to second-guess states’ certified election results; and also makes it clear that the Vice President only plays a ceremonial role in the counting of electoral votes.

As a result, when Vice President Kamala Harris presides over the certification process, she will perform the same role that Vice President Mike Pence performed four years ago – paving the way for the inauguration of Donald Trump as America’s 47th President.
