Creetown gaffer Martin McCaulay is proud of his players hauling themselves back into title contention – even if they have had a recent blip.

McCaulay took charge at Castle Cary Park after Jamie Adams stepped down in August for family reasons.

He steered the side to as nine South of Scotland League wins in his first nine games before a 2-2 draw with St Cuthbert Wanderers just before Christmas.

Creetown went into the winter break fourth in the table, three points off Nithsdale Wanderers who have played a game more.

McCaulay said: “If I look at it overall I’ve got to credit the players for getting themselves back into the mix.

“I’ve never spoken to them about a title race or anything because after the start we had, it’s was quite near impossible. The players stuck together, we just took it game by game and got on with it.

“Before Saints they deserved all the credit in the world.

“Overall it’s been a great reaction after the start, it just takes a wee bit of the shine off it.”

Creetown’s return to action on January 4 sees them go to title holders Dalbeattie Star.

McCaulay said: “The last result makes it a massive January for us. We go into it away to Dalbeattie in league, away to Abbey Vale in the league then away to Mid Annandale in the cup.”
