As the UK remains gripped by dreary weather, many are eagerly planning their sunny getaways for the upcoming months.

While it might seem a good idea to dress for your holiday destination when heading to the airport, some cabin crew members have advised against this due to the chilly air con on board.

However, in a TikTok video, an ex-flight attendant has shared that there can also be a safety reason for not wearing skimpy clothing, recommending travellers to wear long trousers and cover their legs on flights.

“Obviously you think that’s a joke, but what I’m saying is do not wear shorts,” asserted Drake, who posts under the username drakepooley. “The reason being, if you have an emergency and you need to use the slide, you will literally burn your skin off.”

He also described his flight training experience with Emirates, highlighting the importance of protecting your skin while using the emergency slides.

“This was the best word of advice is that, especially in an emergency when you’re trying to get out quick, this stuff [on the slide] is designed to get you down as fast as possible, and it burns,” he explained. “Like to the point where, if you’re sliding down, you are supposed to keep your hands on top of your thighs because if you try to use your hands on the slide, your hands will get burned and your skin could get burned off.”

He stressed the significance of wearing long trousers when flying, stating: “Obviously, no one wants to get into an emergency, but this could save you a lot of pain.”

Many thanked Drake for his advice, yet some queried why flight attendants don’t always cover their legs. One asked: “Wait so why do some flight attendants uniforms require skirts then? I know they typically also require pantyhose but is that enough fabric to prevent the burns you’re talking about?”

Meanwhile, another advised: “If it burns skin then don’t wear work out leggings either! The material will melt and fuse to your skin.”
