A 6-year-old boy died and 17 people were injured Thursday in a New Jersey apartment fire.

The fire was reported around 3 p.m. at the Cambridge Hall apartment complex in Ewing, a township in Mercer County.

First responders were told a child was trapped on the fourth floor in the apartment where the fire started.

“Officers began evacuating the building and attempted to reach the main apartment on the fourth floor where the fire originated, encountering heavy smoke and flames,” Ewing police said in a news release.

The 6-year-old was found unresponsive and taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. His identity was not made public.

Officials said 13 police officers, one firefighter and three residents were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor burns, smoke inhalation and exhaustion.

The American Red Cross told NBC10 that 16 residents from 12 damaged apartments were displaced and needed assistance after the fire, which was put out around 4 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials said it did not appear to be suspicious.
