(Gray News) – A six-month pregnant teacher from California died after falling down a gorge while hiking in Greece, according to multiple reports.
Officials said 33-year-old Clara Thomann, was critically injured after she “slipped and fell” 164 feet down on the Greek island of Crete two days before Christmas, the Greek Reporter reported.
Thomann, who was a teacher at Dos Pueblos High School, lost her unborn baby in the fall and suffered multiple fractures to her skull and chest.
She remained in the hospital until she was pronounced brain-dead on Dec. 29.
According to a CaringBridge post, Thomann’s family is “heartbroken.”
“Despite the best efforts of many doctors, we lost ‘Crunch Wrap,’ our baby. The injuries Clara sustained are insurmountable and she was declared brain dead … we are all heartbroken,” the family wrote.
Thomann and her baby’s remains were cremated in Athens, Greece, on Friday.
They also donated her organs, including her heart, liver and pancreas.
