TV host Maya Jama has spoken out about the status of her relationship with rapper Stormzy, stating that they’re content in the “friendship zone” after their second split. The couple, who first started dating in 2014, initially parted ways in 2019 before reigniting their romance in August 2023.
However, by July 2024, Jama, 30, and Stormzy, now 31, decided to call it quits again. Speaking to the Guardian, Jama made it clear that a romantic reunion is off the cards, explaining: “No, I think we’re happy in this friendship zone.”
Delving deeper into public fascination with celebrity unions, she remarked: “I think it’s nice that people love him for being cute and love me for being cute, and when two people you like come together then people get excited by it.”
Highlighting the nature of fame, she continued: “That’s just what happens in the celebrity world, don’t you think?” She also mentioned the challenges of dating while in the spotlight, noting: “Anybody I date is going to be a thing at the moment.”
Jama elaborated on the media attention she receives, jokingly referring to speculation around any man she’s seen with: “Because everybody I’m seen with – any friend, or my cousin recently – it’s Maya and the mystery man, so I can’t be seen with any man publicly without the media making a story of it.”
Stormzy, whose hit song ‘Lessons’ from 2019 is believed to reflect on their initial breakup, continues to make waves in the music industry. Meanwhile, Jama is enjoying a successful career as well, serving on the judging panel of The Masked Singer, and gearing up to host Love Island: All Stars.
Her impressive resume includes presenting BBC radio shows, hosting the Brit Awards, and running her own podcast, When Life Gives You Melons.
Reports have emerged linking Jama to Portuguese footballer Ruben Dias, who is currently playing for Manchester City.
