A woman was scolded by her sister during a family holiday after she innocently bought an ice cream.

Family holidays can be delightful breaks from the daily grind, but they can also spark frustrations and occasional disputes.

One woman and her partner are currently enjoying a two-week break at her family’s holiday home, joined by her parents, her siblings and their children. She described the holiday as “fun for the most part”, but admitted it “gets pretty suffocating being around so many kids all the time”.

Recently, her siblings decided to have some family time of their own, so she and her partner spent the day at a winery. Upon their return, they stopped at a local shop to buy ice cream.

This is where things took a sour turn. On Reddit, the woman shared: “When we were leaving the ice cream shop, my sister and her kids were coming back from the beach.

“Well, one of my nephews then wanted ice cream and proceeded to have a meltdown. Instead of calming him down, my sister blamed us [and said], ‘Now look what I have to deal with, [what] did you get ice cream for??’

“Then later on, she’s complaining to my mum that we went and did our own thing, when it was a family holiday and we should only do things with family – even though they were doing their own thing anyway.”

The woman expressed frustration that throughout the holiday, she and her partner had participated in every planned activity, mostly centred around the children, and had spent hours watching films and playing games with her nieces and nephews.

In her Reddit post, which she labelled a “rant”, she questioned: “Why can’t we have one day on our own? Are adults not allowed to have fun? Should we have just gone into hibernation for the day until the kids got back? …Not sure why aunts and uncles now are expected to revolve their lives/days around nieces/nephews.”

Commenters shared their thoughts, with one joking: “How dare you do your own thing (like we have) IN PUBLIC WHERE WE MIGHT SEE YOU (rather than back in the family villa where we will definitely see you).”

Another suggested: “She wanted you to either go with them to the beach as babysitter. Or she wanted you to buy them free ice cream. Either way, she is mad you had fun and she had to watch her kids on the beach like a hawk and zero relaxing time”.

The woman responded: “Funny thing is, we would have happily bought them one, but she didn’t want them to have any”.

Another person added: “Your sister can seethe and cry more about the fact that you two got ice cream. Your sister needs to learn that others don’t have to deny themselves things for her ease of life. Your nephew needs to learn that just because someone else has something doesn’t mean they get to have it too. This is all entitled behaviour.”
