Sizzling Scott McTominay’s Italian adventure hit new heights as the Scotland star fired Napoli to the top of Serie A.

The midfielder, who made a £26million summer switch from Manchester United, hit the third in a 3-0 win over Fiorentina after David Neres’ opener and Romelu Lukaku’s penalty in Florence. It’s McTominay’s fourth goal in 15 appearances for the Italian giants, with the triumph sending Napoli three points clear of Atalanta and four ahead of Inter Milan, though both have games in hand.

Antonio Conte’s side dominated from the off and took the lead in 29 minutes when Neres thumped in from close range. And they were two clear early in the second half when Lukaku converted from 12 yards after a Frank Anguissa foul. McTominay added a third in the 68th minute with a fierce low finish.

Post-match Napoli gaffer Conte did not appear, with it later revealed he’d been handed tragic news. His assistant Cristian Stellini said: “We are very happy with the victory, but at the same time we suffered a great loss today. A child who was close to us all had been ill, and we got news this afternoon that he had died. We tried to give him moments of joy and in return he gave us so much strength. We want to send a message of strength to all families out there dealing with devastating illnesses. Goodbye, Daniele.”
