WELCH, W.Va. – Friday, Jan. 3 marked the first day back for students who attend Welch Elementary School, but today was no ordinary day of classes.
With the spring semester beginning on a Friday this year, the faculty at Welch Elementary banded together to encourage kids to attend the first day back after the holidays.
Their efforts brought to life the STEAM activity day. The Principal of Welch, Sarah Diaz, said that it’s been a great way for the kids to look forward to going back to school.
“It has been exciting. The hallways have been quiet because the kids are loud and engaged and on the floor doing science projects and really just having a great time in their classrooms,” said Diaz.
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, and the students of Welch spent the day participating in activities that correlate with those categories, doing projects like origami, painting, birdhouse building, and more.
A third grade teacher at Welch, Tina Blankenship, says the students have enjoyed the hands-on learning.
“It’s amazing because… usually when they come back, they’re tired and they’re worn out and they just don’t want nobody to fool with them or anything and…it has been really good… to have them come in and be ready to learn, and ready to do things,” explained Blankenship. To keep up to date with events happening at Welch Elementary School, you can follow them on Facebook.
