NORTH TEXAS (KTVT) — Faucet covers are just one thing some experts are recommending homeowners should buy ahead of severe winter weather.
Allison Cassias, who lives in North Texas, said she prepared early before the winter weather is set to hit her region this week.
“You gotta plan ahead because if you wait, you never know what happens to the inside,” Cassias said.
Cassias bought a few faucet covers at just $4 each for her home as well as her neighbors’ homes.
The Park Row Ace Hardware story stocked up on extra faucet covers and pipe covers before the weekend.
Employee Michael Tatum said the $4 faucet covers could save homeowners a lot of money in damages caused by the cold weather.
“We’ve been selling a lot of them today, and like I said, it’s best to prep before the cold actually hits,” he said.
Clayton Robinson, the co-owner of CR Plumbing, said calls for service start coming in as soon as the freeze hits. The cost for repair can be exponential.
“Hundreds, thousands because you’ve got water damage,” Robinson said.
Robinson walked through the main things to know to protect pipes during cold weather.
He talked first about outdoor pipes using a faucet cover.
“Even if you don’t have the covers, take off the hose, make sure nothing’s dripping on there,” he said. “Little hook in here (faucet cover), you’re gonna wrap it around in there, make sure it stays close, keep it tight. Little clip here, push in, everything should be good from there,” Robinson said while walking through the process.
When it drops below 32 degrees or to a freezing point, Robinson said that is when he recommends turning the hot and cold water on a slow trickle on the outside faucets.
If the pipes do end up freezing, Robinson said to keep an eye on it.
“If you start seeing any signs of water on the outside or on the inside, that’s when you need to call us immediately. We can get over there,” he said.
