American Primeval

First up is a series that will be available to stream in a matter of days. American Primeval looks set to appeal to fans of other western epics such as Yellowstone, Lawman and Godless.

It is set in America 1857, where peace is always in danger with very few safe havens among brutal lands. The series is a fictionalised examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control the land in the American west.

Taylor Kitsch leads the cast and the production employed an Indigenous Cultural Consultant to bring authenticity to its portrayal of early American life. Director and executive producer Peter Berg said of the position: “Julie was there every day making sure that we got it right — that we got the hair right, the jewellery right, the clothes right, the language right, the behaviour right, for the time period and Nations.

“I knew what I didn’t know, and she was extremely valuable in helping us all make sure that we did get it right. We’re very mindful of how important it is that all of these different groups are honoured, that our research and depictions are accurate.”

American Primeval is streaming on Netflix from January 9

Zero Day

Zero Day asks a pertinent question for many in 2025 – how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?

Robert De Niro leads the cast and will star alongside Angela Bassett, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Connie Britton, Matthew Modine, Dan Stevens and Clark Gregg. A cyberattack causes chaos and fatalities across the country and it is up to former President George Mullen (De Niro), who leads the Zero Day Commission to find the perpetrators.

Zero Day is streaming on Netflix from February 20

The story will follow a murder investigation after a body is discovered in the White House, leaving one eccentric detective to delve deeper among 157 suspects in the Presidential staff.

The Residence is being billed as a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the most famous residence in the US. Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black stars in the show alongside Marvel star Randall Park and Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Set during the early days of Instagram, Apple Cider Vinegar follows two young women who set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, influencing their global online communities along the way — if only it were true.

While the series has its foundations in truth and is inspired by the book The Woman Who Fooled the World by journalists Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano, it is very much a work of fiction.

Described by Netflix as a true-ish story based on a lie, certain characters and events have been created or fictionalised. It stars Kaitlyn Dever who is set for a big 2025 as she will also star in the second season of HBO’s The Last of US. Apple Cider Vinegar is the only one on this list which is yet to receive a firm release date from Netflix but it’s still possible to add on your watchlist now.
