DETROIT (WXYZ) – A Michigan woman spent New Year’s Even in the hospital after she was attacked by two pit bulls.
A Detroit resident who asked to only be referred to as Ashley was left searching for answers after she was attacked around 10:40 a.m. on Dec. 31.
She was walking to her local liquor and convenience store when the two dogs came out of nowhere and attacked her.
“I was like ‘Why me? Why did it happen to me?’” she said.
Ashley said she screamed for help and tried to get away by climbing a nearby fence.
“I was going to die,” she said. “I thought they were going to rip my leg off.”
Neighbors said they also saw the same pit bulls attack and killed a stray cat and another pet dog that same day.
“I was scared. Nothing scares me, but that scared me,” Ashley said.
The entire ordeal spanned multiple blocks and caused mayhem in the community. Ashley said people stopped to help her and were bitten by the dogs themselves. She also said she would not have survived if not for those who stepped in.
“Everybody that was trying to help me got injured,” she said. “The one guy’s head got ripped. I’m really appreciative of them because if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here.”
Detroit Police arrived at the scene moments later.
They said one of the pit bulls was killed and the other was taken to animal control.
Ashley had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment. She rang in the new year from a hospital bed.
“That incident right there should have never happened,” she said.
Ashley also said she wants to see the dogs’ owners held responsible so the community can once again feel safe doing everyday tasks again.
“It happens to me, and other people were injured in the process,” she said. “They need to be held accountable.”
