AFD said wind was creating smoky conditions for fire crews.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Fire Department says a large fire at a North Austin apartment complex on Sunday afternoon is now under control.

AFD said the fire was on the second floor of a three-story building in the 11500 block of Metric Blvd., near the intersection of West Braker Lane, at the Trails of Walnut Creek Apartments.

Just after 4 p.m., AFD said the fire was burning through the roof of the building. Crews were working to find and contain fire in the attic driven by winds.

“Conditions inside the building are increasingly smoke-filled and dangerous due to wind driving the fire in the attic,” AFD said.

The fire was upgraded to a third-alarm fire by 4:07 p.m. The fire was declared under control by 4:17 p.m.

Fire crews rescued six cats, three dogs and one snake from the building. AFD said all pets have been accounted for and are safe.

AFD said no one was injured in the fire.

Residents of all 24 apartments in the building where the fire happened are displaced. One other building was temporarily evacuated due to smoke, but those residents have been allowed to return.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but arson investigators are on the scene, according to AFD.
