Alan Shearer has hailed the “incredible atmosphere” at Ibrox after the Newcastle hero took in the first Rangers vs Celtic clash of the year.

The former England international made the trip north for the Scottish Premiership showdown between the Glasgow giants as Philippe Clement‘s side pulled off a shock 3-0 win over the Hoops to secure a perfect start to 2025. Shearer – who previously wrote off the Light Blues’ title chances after they had fallen six points behind Celtic – admitted the result had caught him by surprise as he gushed over the sound form the stands.

Asked about his trip over the border by Gary Lineker of The Rest Is Football podcast, he said: “There wasn’t any Celtic fans in there, but it was an incredible atmosphere that the Rangers fans generated. I think if everyone was honest, not many people expected Rangers to win the game the way their season is going. It was a great game, and Rangers did unbelievably well to win the game.”

The Celtic fans were again locked out of the away end at Ibrox – but the away fan ban is set to come to an end when the Hoops next host Rangers in March. And it’s something Shearer can’t wait to see.

He went on: “I think the next one is at Celtic and they are allowing in a small number – maybe 2000-3000 – Rangers fans, and then Rangers have to do the same when Celtic come to Ibrox. It’s just a brilliant atmosphere when both sets of fans are in.”
