BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent interrupted Monday’s programme to bring viewers urgent weather and travel updates.

In this morning’s broadcast (January 6), Sally, aged 53, informed viewers of significant snow-related travel disruption as Manchester Airport had declared their runways ‘temporarily closed due to heavy snow’.

Her co-presenter Jon Kay remarked: “That winter weather still causing problems this morning, Sally” to which Sally replied: “Absolutely right, Jon! Further snow, ice and rain are causing more disruption across the UK this morning.”

At that moment, a breaking news ticker appeared on the screen, prompting Sally to announce: “Manchester Airport says it has shut both of its runways for the second time in two days because of heavy snow in the area.”

Taking to Twitter, now X, on Monday morning, Manchester Airport provided an update for passengers, stating: “Our runways are temporarily closed due to heavy snow as our teams work hard to clear them as quickly as possible.

“The safety of our passengers is our top priority and we appreciate your patience during this time. Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra travel time today. We will update you as soon as possible. Thank you.”

Later, at 7:15am, Manchester Airport announced: “Our runways are now open but as a result of the earlier closure some departures and arrivals may still experience delays.

“Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra time for your journey today. We would like to thank our teams for their hard work in getting the runways operational again. The safety of our customers remains our top priority. Thank you for your understanding and patience.”

Weather warnings continue across much of the UK on Monday, with commuters advised to prepare for snow, ice, and rain.

The ongoing bad weather could bring further travel disruptions, possibly including floods due to heavy rain and melting snow, the Met Office warns. Currently, there are over 60 flood warnings and some 260 alerts in place.

This follows a weekend where most parts of the UK experienced significant snowfall or icy conditions.
