The district wants to hear from families about their concerns on current walking routes within two miles of a campus.

LEANDER, Texas — Leander ISD is looking for feedback on its bus services.

The district is trying to figure out where to provide bus services to students who live within two miles of a campus. It’s asking families to share their concerns about current walking routes, and it will then use that input to plan its hazardous routes assessments.

In Leander ISD, families that live closer than two miles from their assigned school fall into the “Not Eligible for Transportation Zone,” or NETZone. The district said students in that zone are only provided bus service if their route to school is rated as “hazardous.”

Each year, members of the district’s transportation team review the bus routes of families receiving bus service who live inside the NETZone. Those members also assess the routes of families in the NETZone that have had significant chances, like new construction or updates to road conditions.

Routes in the NETZone automatically qualify for bus service if they cross an arterial street or a highway without controls (like a stop sign, crosswalk, traffic signal or crossing guard); align alongside a road with a speed limit over 45 mph; or cross a railroad crossing. The district uses a matrix to score routes and determine whether a student qualifies for bus service.

Right now, the district has an online form open to allow families to provide feedback on hazardous routes. The form will close on Jan. 21. Parents with students at different schools are asked to complete the form for each school.
