TAZEWELL, Va. – As winter weather builds, driving becomes more hazardous. Avoiding travel in icy conditions is preferred, but if you need to drive, safety is the priority. Accidents are common on slick roads, and Sergeant Henry Christian of the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office said many cars are sliding on the roads in this weather:

Make sure before you get on the road that you are equipped to drive in winter conditions, not just in supplies, but in skill.

Sergeant Christian explained that you need to be able to recover the vehicle should you lose control, drive slowly, keep distance from other cars, avoid sudden movements and braking, and give yourself plenty of time to stop as well.

Sergeant Christian also emphasized the need to be prepared for driving in such conditions, and that your car should be winter-ready:

For example, you should keep emergency blankets, food, and water in your car in the event that you may get stranded. Make sure your car is clear of snow, and that you keep your headlights on when driving so others can see you.

Sergeant Christian says that for tips on maneuvering your vehicle in the winter weather, there are driving schools and online videos to help. To keep up to date on the weather conditions, click here.
