Marital bliss can be hard to come by these days, with factors like the cost of living and childcare playing a significant part in modern day relationships.

In 2023, nearly 27,000 marriages were registered in Scotland. This is similar to the number before the pandemic, meaning Scots clearly aren’t being put off tying the knot – but there is one Scottish city in particular which, on the contrary, looks to be seeking a way out more than any other.

According to a new study, Dundee is the second most popular UK city for people seeking divorce. Searches for ‘how to get a divorce in the UK’ have upped by 70 per cent in the last month, with over 3,000 searches each month across the country. Using this metric, Weightmans has named the City of Discovery as the second most prevalent for break-ups.

“In our practice, we see a wide range of reasons and situations leading to divorce, and it’s our role to provide nuanced advice and support that respects the complexities of each case,” Antony Ball, Partner at Weightmans, said.

“Whether it’s negotiating financial settlements or addressing child arrangements, the aim is always to reach a resolution that minimises conflict and considers the well-being of all parties, especially children.”

Dundee recorded 61 searches of divorce per 100,000 people which went down as the second highest search volume for divorce-related queries in the UK. In comparison, Norwich and Huddersfield came in at first and third place with 69 and 56 searches per 100,000 people respectively.

In light of the research, which may spell trouble in paradise for Dundonian couples, experts have revealed advice on how Scots in this part of the east coast can navigate a divorce and protect their future during a turbulent time.

Legal and financial preparation is key, say the experts. It’s essential to gather and organise documents, including past tax returns, employment details, and information about your assets and income. This comprehensive preparation will help your understanding when considering the financial implications of a divorce.

Emotional and mental preparedness should not be overlooked. Having a support system is vital as it’s important to prepare yourself emotionally for the challenges ahead. Consider speaking with a therapist to navigate the emotional turmoil and ensure you have a solid support network comprising family, friends, and professional counsellors.

If children are involved, prioritise their well-being. This includes making childcare arrangements, understanding child support obligations, and having clear, age-appropriate conversations with children about the situation.

Taking steps to safeguard your privacy and information security is also something to consider. This can include setting up a new email account, changing passwords, and ensuring your mail and sensitive documents are secure and inaccessible to your spouse.

Start thinking about your post-divorce life early in the process as this can be helpful, too. This includes financial planning, considering living arrangements, possible career or job changes if necessary, and setting realistic expectations for life after divorce. Preparing for these changes early can make the transition smoother.
