AUSTIN, Texas — Road conditions in Central Texas are clear on Monday, but we could be in for some icy conditions later this week.
TxDOT began treating heavily traveled roadways in Austin on Monday, spraying brine on the pavement. Brine is a mix of water and salt that prevents ice and snow from sticking to the highway.

TxDOT officials are warning drivers that just because the roads are treated doesn’t mean they will be passable.
“Know before you go on the road, know exactly what you’re driving into, but most importantly if you do not have to leave your home, it’s best to just stay put,” said Antonio Luján, TxDOT spokesperson. “Wait it out a day.”
TxDOT also has its HERO roadside assistance program that can help stranded drivers in bad weather.
Wintry precipitation is expected across Texas from Wednesday night into Friday.
With the cold weather, what should residents do?
Residents are urged to take precautions to protect plants, pets and exposed plumbing from any frost that develops and freezing conditions.
NWS advises wearing hats and gloves when venturing outside and ensuring outdoor animals have adequate shelter, food and unfrozen water. Additionally, portable heaters should be used properly, and generators or grills should not be used indoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Older family members, friends and neighbors should be checked on frequently during the advisory period.
Texas power grid
As Texans, we know when the temperatures drop, the power grid and ERCOT become top of mind. ERCOT has issued a Weather Watch due to freezing temperatures forecasted across the region.
The watch is in effect from Monday, Jan. 6 through Friday, Jan. 10. Grid conditions are expected to be normal during the Weather Watch. There was no current expectation of an energy emergency.
