The results for the cheapest supermarket to get your groceries from in 2024 have been revealed – with Aldi taking the title once again.
Consumer watchdog Which? conducts a monthly comparison of prices across eight major supermarkets to help shoppers get the best value. Last year, the German budget chain took the crown for all 12 months, making it the cheapest overall.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that Aldi has been named the most affordable supermarket in the UK. It beat out rival Lidl, alongside other major retailers such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
The results came after the Which? comparison found that Aldi was offering shoppers the cheapest prices for the final month of the year. A list of 56 groceries of own-branded and branded items was found to cost just £100.29 on an average at the German chain.
By comparison, Waitrose was the most expensive option for December with an average £129.83, almost £30 more expensive than Aldi. According to Which?, shopping at Aldi over the year could save shoppers an average of £393 compared to Waitrose.
The results also highlighted how Aldi managed to beat out loyalty scheme prices. Fellow budget chain Lidl came in second, as prices for Lidl Plus shoppers came to £101.48, with regular prices costing just a little bit more at £101.56.
Prices were also cheaper than popular schemes at Tesco and Sainsbury’s, with Clubcard and Nectar shoppers being charged £111.22 and £112.13 respectively. Meanwhile, Morrisons’ More scheme was further down the list with an average of £114.01.
The Which? data for its monthly comparison looks at the prices of a selection of groceries at each supermarket, based on availability at the time. For December, the likes of Birds Eye peas, Hovis Bread, alongside essentials such as milk and butter were included.
Harry Rose, Editor of Which? magazine, said: “Our research shows Aldi has retained its crown as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in 2024. A shopper would have saved £393 on average, over the course of a year by choosing to shop at the German discounter rather than the most expensive alternative.
“After the added expense of the festive period, many households will be looking to cut costs. Our analysis shows that by switching supermarkets, shoppers can make significant savings, highlighting the advantages of shopping around where possible.”
Meanwhile, for a larger shop of 150 items, Tesco Clubcard prices were found to be the cheapest overall with an average of £410.40, with Sainsbury’s Nectar prices following closely behind at £412.14. The larger shop excludes Aldi and Lidl due to a larger amount of stock not always available.
