Many of us believe we’re well-informed about cancer, but there’s always more to learn.

Lindsey Jayn, who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in her 30s, knows this all too well. Colorectal cancer, also known as bowel, colon or rectal cancer, develops in the colon or rectum and is one of the most common cancers worldwide.

It can be fatal if not detected early and treated properly. In a recent TikTok video, Lindsey confessed she overlooked four symptoms before her diagnosis. These included irregular bowel movements, persistent bloating, undiagnosed food sensitivities, and constipation lasting several days.

She urges people to recognise these signs, which can easily be mistaken for other conditions. Now a cancer survivor, Lindsey believes it’s crucial to monitor your health.

She uses her platform to teach people what she’s learnt about cancer.

Several people have viewed the video since it was shared, and people were quick to comment too. They shared their personal experiences about their own health journeys.

One said: “I was diagnosed at 57. Had 0 symptoms. Went for my first colonscopy, had eight-hour surgery. Five years ok now.”

Another wrote: “Sometimes the symptoms can be so minimal and can be passed off as something else.” A third also replied: “I have a colonscopy in January and have all the same symptoms.”

What are the symptoms of bowel cancer?

According to the NHS, the common symptoms to look out for include:

  • Changes in your poo, such as experiencing diarrhoea, constipation or softer poo that is not normal for you
  • Needing to poo less or more often than normal
  • Blood in your poo
  • Bleeding from your bottom
  • Feeling like you need to use the loo often
  • Tummy pain
  • A lump in your tummy
  • Bloating
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Feeling constantly tired for no reason

It’s worth noting that, if you experience any of these symptoms, it doesn’t mean you have bowel cancer. But, if you have experienced any of these symptoms for three weeks or more, you should seek medical attention for advice.
