Lt. Mark Meadows was reportedly directing traffic outside an area church.

IRONDALE, Ala. — The Irondale Police Department is grieving the loss of one of its most dedicated officers, Lt. Mark Meadows, who died while on duty Monday morning.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Monday, as Lt. Meadows was directing traffic at an intersection. AL.com reports that Meadows was stationed outside the Church of the Highlands, which was in the midst of a ’21 Days of Prayer’ service. A passing vehicle struck him, and he was transported to Grandview Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

In a statement, the Irondale Police Department expressed gratitude to neighboring police agencies for their support during this difficult time. Grief counseling is being offered to department members and others affected by the tragedy.

Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. reflected on the legacy of Lt. Meadows, who had served the Irondale community for over three decades.

“Lt. Mark Meadows was a treasured member of our Irondale family for over 30 years,” said Stewart. “He was a man of few words but always led by example and embodied the heart of a true public servant. Lt. Meadows will be dearly missed by his brothers and sisters at the Irondale Police Department, as well as by all of our City employees and citizens. We are comforted in knowing that he is with his heavenly father, and we will continue to cover his family in prayer as they grieve this great loss.”

The department extended its heartfelt condolences to Lt. Meadows’ family, friends, and colleagues, acknowledging the deep loss felt across the community.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
