A body has been found in the search for a missing man who vanished just days after Christmas.

Police have confirmed that a body was discovered near to the River Tay to the south of Perth on Tuesday morning.

Formal identification is yet to take place however officers have informed the family of John McNeil.

The 52-year-old was reported missing from Perth on Friday, December 27.

Police are treating the death as unexplained and non-suspicious.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.25 am on Tuesday, 7 January, 2025 police were made aware of a body found near to the River Tay to the south of Perth.

“Formal identification is still to take place however the family of missing man John McNeil, 52, has been informed.

“The death is being treated as unexplained but is not believed to be suspicious and enquiries are ongoing. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
