MERIDIAN COUNTY, Calif. (Gray News) – Authorities say a California mother is accused of suffocating her 11-year-old son to death after his body was found in a trailer at an RV park.
Meagan Dixon, 44, is being held on a $1 million bail after her 11-year-old son was found dead in a trailer at Lovey’s Landing, an RV park outside Meridian. She is facing charges related to homicide and child endangerment, according to Sutter County Sheriff Brandon Barnes.
In a Monday press conference, Barnes says deputies responded to the RV park around 10 a.m. Sunday on a report of a verbal altercation between residents. The dispute started after neighbors tried to check on Dixon’s 11-year-old son, who had not been seen outside playing for several days.
Witnesses told investigators Dixon appeared to be suffering from some type of drug-induced or manic episode.
First responders found Dixon’s son dead in a trailer. Evidence suggested the 11-year-old had been suffocated, and he appeared to have been dead for days, according to the sheriff.
Neighbors told deputies the boy was homeschooled and may have had autism. One neighbor who says her sons were close to the 11-year-old described him to KOVR/KMAX as the “sweetest little boy, just absolutely loving.”
Barnes offered condolences to the victim’s loved ones and to those in the community impacted by his death. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine his official cause and manner of death.
Three dogs were also found dead on the property, Barnes says. One was in the trailer and two were in a vehicle registered to Dixon. Postmortem exams will be conducted to determine their causes of death.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Dixon may face additional charges in the case, according to the sheriff.
