Drivers often think they’re experts behind the wheel, but even the most experienced could do with a refresher now and again.
Driving instructor Annie Winterburn has been helping many with her insights into a common gear-changing blunder many of us make. She’s shared what could be considered the “golden rule” that’s overlooked by many motorists, especially when facing a daunting incline.
On TikTok, Annie explained: “The lower gears in your car, they’ll send more power to your wheels. Lower gears are kind of the most powerful gears. As you speed up, you can go into higher gears.”
When it comes to theory tests, she said once you know that lower gears add more power to your wheels, it can actually help you to answer a lot of questions. She noted they also give you “engine braking”, which means you’ll automatically slow down a little.
Annie added: “The only time you use a higher gear is when you’re driving on ice.” If you drive an automatic car, and need a lower gear, she said the best thing to do is use kickdown.
If you press the gas pedal all the way down then the car should automatically go down into a lower gear. This is the best way to manage it, according to the expert.
Her instructional clip has gone viral, racking up over 1,000 views and attracting a lot of positive feedback from viewers who appreciate her handy hints
